Why almost everyone guesses low
Subscriptions are designed to be easy to forget. Each one is small enough that it never feels like a decision, and once it's on autopay you stop seeing it. Ten charges of $15 don't register the way one $150 bill would, even though they cost the same.
Annual plans make it worse. A yearly renewal shows up once, and by the next time it hits you've forgotten it exists. Free trials that roll into paid plans, price increases that arrive by email, and family plans someone else set up all add to the gap between what you think you pay and what you do.
That's also why the price duel is harder than it looks. A few dollars a week sounds smaller than a single yearly fee, but multiply by 52 and it often isn't. Converting everything to a yearly number is the simplest way to compare charges honestly.
The fix isn't cancelling everything. It's seeing the full list once in a while and making a deliberate call on each one. Keep what you'd happily sign up for again today and drop the rest.
Questions people ask
How much does the average person spend on subscriptions?
Published estimates vary a lot depending on who's counting and what counts as a subscription, so treat any single average with suspicion. What surveys tend to agree on is the gap: people usually underestimate their own subscription spending, often by a wide margin. That gap is what this quiz is built to show you, using your own numbers instead of someone else's average.
Why are the starting amounts not exact prices?
Prices change often, differ between Canada and the US, and depend on the plan, taxes and whether you're on a promo. The amounts in the quiz are rough placeholders so you can play quickly, and the prices in the price duel are made up for the game. For a real answer, replace each amount with what's on your card statement.
How is my score worked out?
Up to 600 points come from how close your yearly guess was to the total you added up, and up to 400 come from the price duel. If you skip the duel, your score is based on your guess alone. Your best score is saved in this browser only.
What's the fastest way to find subscriptions I've forgotten about?
Scroll back through three months of credit card and bank statements and look for any amount that repeats. Then check the subscriptions list in your phone's app store settings, since a lot of app subscriptions are billed there instead of directly. Annual renewals are the easiest to miss, so a full twelve months of statements is better if you can manage it.
Does Sumyfi cancel subscriptions for me?
No. Sumyfi shows your recurring charges, what's due in the next 10 days, and your yearly total, so you can decide what to keep. Cancelling is done with the company directly. We think that's the right split: you stay in control of your accounts and nobody takes a cut of what you save.
